Bottle Bank

Plastic Lace

Date

Feb-May 2015, lasting two months

Caroline TRICAUD

The aim of this workshop was to come up with solutions
to counter intended obsolescence of plastic bottles.
We asked ourselves this question : what if the main purpose of the bottle - to contain a beverage- was done away with ?
Throughout this workshop, we collected bottles from
our own school, which makes up almost 200 bottles
a day! We experimented with a laser cutter and engraver. We chose different patterns, all inspired by nature : leaves, the water’s surface, cells etc.
Perforation of the bottles proved difficult due to their curved shape. This is why we decided to clamp the bottles to make sure they did not move. The pattern had to be limited
to central strip on the bottle to limit image distortion
and to minimise the laser-bottle separation. We turned
the bottle to perforate the entire body.
Then, we obtained a material full of emptiness.
A new material that complements light.

We drew our inspiration from the traditional North African wooden lattice, and its modern interpretation on the facade of the Mucem

-Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations- in Marseille.
